How The Internet Has Affected The Television Industry

Netflix:
What is Netflix? Netflix is a provider of on-demand Internet streaming. It was established in 1997. You can watch instantly, via PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, iPad, iPhone, Android or Windows phone or tablet. Download the free Netflix application from the app store and log into your Netflix account.
What is its business model? Netflix costs £5.99 per month for unlimited viewing of film and TV series in their libraries, however they recieve their first month free as a trial. Users use their Facebook account, or create a account using their email address to subscribe. It is easily cancelled online, 24 hours a day. There are no cancellation fees although there are no refunds for months already paid for.

When was it introduced? Was it originally streaming video on demand? Why did it change? Netflix introduced the monthly subscription concept in September 1999, but then dropped the single-rental model in early 2000. In March 2011, Netflix announced plans to begin acquiring original content for its popular Watch Instantly subscription service, beginning with the hour-long political drama House of Cards, which debuted on the streaming service in February 2013. DreamWorks Animation and Netflix agreed to produce a new animated series called Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), based on the upcoming movie Turbo, which will air in December 2013.

House of Cards:
What is it about? House of Cards is an adaptation of a previous BBC miniseries of the same name which is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. The entire first season premiered on February 1, 2013 on the streaming service Netflix. A second season of 13 episodes is currently in production.
House of Cards is a political drama set in present day Washington, D.C.. It is the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina's 5th congressional district and the House Majority Whip, who, after getting passed over for promotion to Secretary of State, decides to exact his revenge on those who betrayed him.
Why is it so significant for our work on internet and the TV industry? As the show is unavailable on television channels, it pushes television channels out of the limelight. Additionally, it is a loss of money for television channels, and huge profit for Netflix. It also bypassed traditional TV networks by premiering the whole 13-part series at onc, so viewers didn't have to wait to watch the show weekly.
Can you find out any facts and figures about the show and its creation/reception? Netflix bid on and won the rights to House of Cards back in 2011 – buying the show before it was shot and committing to two full seasons
